Documenting Your Messages from God: A Journey of Spiritual Growth
Do you ever feel like God is trying to communicate with you, but you’re unsure of what He’s saying? Maybe you’ve had dreams, received scriptures, or felt a strong impression in your spirit, but the meaning wasn’t immediately clear. Over time, these messages can become an incredible testament to God’s hand at work in your life. One way to truly appreciate this is by documenting His messages and reviewing them later. I’ve been doing this since 2015, and I can look back and see the many changes in my life and how much I’ve grown—personally and spiritually.
Why Documenting Is So Powerful
Documenting your messages from God can serve as a tangible record of your spiritual journey. It’s like creating a spiritual diary that chronicles not just what God is saying but how you are growing in your ability to discern and respond to His voice. When you look back at your documented experiences, you may notice patterns, recurring themes, and even prophetic messages that you didn’t understand at the time but have since manifested in your life.
I’ve been doing this for nearly a decade and have accumulated a minimum of seven years of dreams and spiritual encounters. Revisiting these experiences allows me to see God’s faithfulness and the areas where I’ve developed in understanding and maturity. This practice has been instrumental in helping me notice how I’ve changed spiritually—even during times when I was struggling to understand what God was saying.
How and When to Record
Write It Down Immediately: When you receive a message—whether through dreams, impressions, scriptures, or even conversations that seem to have a deeper meaning—document it as soon as possible. The best time to record is right when you wake up from a dream or when a message is fresh in your mind.
Include the Date and Time: Adding dates to your entries can show you the timeline of God’s work in your life. You might find that a message received years ago didn’t make sense until recently, when it began to manifest in your reality.
Describe Your Thoughts and Feelings: Record not just the message itself but also your initial reaction, what you felt God was trying to say, and your understanding (or lack thereof) at the time. This adds layers to your entries and helps track your spiritual growth over the years.
Pray for Clarity: Sometimes, the messages aren’t clear right away. Pray over each entry and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. Over time, you may notice certain words, themes, or symbols repeatedly showing up, giving you deeper insight into what God is trying to communicate.
Seeing the Fruit of God’s Messages
The most rewarding part of documenting your experiences is being able to look back and see when and how they came to pass. There are entries in my journals that didn’t make sense until years later when God brought clarity, or I experienced a season that aligned with what He had shown me previously.
For example, in some of my older entries, I recorded dreams that I didn’t understand at the time—vivid scenes, symbolic images, and even specific people in my life. But now, as I reflect, I can see God was preparing me, guiding me, and revealing warnings and His plans long before I was even aware of them.
Start Your Own Documentation Journey
If you haven’t started documenting your spiritual experiences, it’s never too late. You don’t have to be a theologian or a dream interpreter to begin. All you need is a journal or even a digital app where you can quickly jot down your experiences, thoughts, and prayers.
Journal Apps: Consider using apps like Evernote, Journey, or Day One for easy access and the ability to search through entries.
Traditional Journals: If you prefer pen and paper, choose a dedicated notebook to keep all your spiritual encounters in one place.
In a few years, you’ll be amazed at how God has guided you, shaped you, and revealed His purpose in your life. What may have seemed like confusion or random events will begin to form a picture of spiritual growth and transformation. And when you see how far you’ve come, it will inspire you to trust Him even more in the present and the future.
A Final Encouragement
Don’t worry if you don’t understand everything right now. God’s timing is perfect; sometimes, His messages are seeds that take years to sprout. Keep documenting, keep praying, and keep trusting. One day, you’ll look back and see how intricately God has woven every message, dream, and encounter into your life story.
So, grab that journal and start documenting. Years from now, you’ll be grateful that you did!
