Spiritual Detox: Are You Living With Someone Else’s Struggles?

Have you ever paused to evaluate the habits you’ve picked up over the years? The ones that didn’t start with you but somehow became part of your life? Some habits are subtle, creeping in from lineage, past relationships, or friendships. Others hit hard and fast, leaving you wondering how you got here in the first place.

It’s time for a spiritual audit.

What’s a Spiritual Audit?

A spiritual audit is a deep, honest reflection on who you were before certain people, relationships, or environments influenced you—and who you’ve become since. It’s a chance to assess whether the person you are today aligns with the person God called you to be.

Think about it:

  • Did they transfer their demons onto you by association?

  • Did you start drinking, smoking, or engaging in destructive behaviors because of them?

  • Were you once active, motivated, and full of life, but now you struggle with laziness and complacency?

  • Did you once have confidence, but now you battle insecurities for no reason?

  • Have you developed a bad habit of overspending, filling your closet with things you don’t even use?

Some of these things didn’t originate with you. They were introduced through a relationship, a childhood pattern, or even a social circle that slowly influenced your mindset and behaviors.

Lineage: The Habits You Didn’t Choose

Generational patterns are real. Your parents, grandparents, and ancestors all had ways of thinking, speaking, and behaving that trickled down to you—whether for good or bad. Maybe you grew up watching financial irresponsibility and now struggle with managing money. Maybe negativity, doubt, and fear were common in your household, and now you find yourself battling anxiety and self-sabotage.

The Bible speaks of generational curses but also of generational blessings. Exodus 20:5-6 reminds us that while sin can pass down through generations, so can the mercy and favor of God for those who love Him. The question is: Are you willing to break cycles that no longer serve you?

Relationships: What Did They Leave With You?

Some relationships don’t just end—they leave a residue.

  • That toxic ex may be gone, but are their words still playing in your mind?

  • That friend who encouraged bad habits may have disappeared, but are their behaviors still a part of you?

  • That unhealthy circle of people may have moved on, but did they transfer their addictions, their fears, and their bad decisions onto you?

1 Corinthians 15:33 warns, “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” Sometimes, we don’t realize the weight of someone’s presence until they’re gone, but the damage is done by then.

Breaking Free: How to Detox From Unwanted Habits

So what now? How do you reclaim yourself and break free from the habits never meant to be yours?

  1. Get Honest With Yourself – Take inventory of your life. What habits, mindsets, and struggles do you battle that didn’t originate with you?

  2. Repent and Renounce – If you’ve picked up sinful or destructive habits, bring them before God. Repent, renounce them, and ask for deliverance.

  3. Break Soul Ties & Generational Cycles – Declare that unhealthy relationships or inherited struggles no longer bind you. Speak life over yourself.

  4. Replace the Old With the New – If you used to be disciplined but became lazy, start setting small goals to rebuild consistency. If you used to be confident but now battle insecurity, meditate on Scriptures that remind you of your identity in Christ.

  5. Guard Your Associations Moving Forward – Be mindful of who and what you allow into your space. What you entertain, you eventually adopt.

Final Thoughts: Reclaiming the You That God Designed

God created you with a purpose, and it’s time to walk in it. Stop carrying habits, burdens, and strongholds that were never meant to be yours. You are not the mistakes of those who came before you. You are not the negative influence of those you once loved. You are not bound to the addictions, struggles, or mindsets that tried to latch onto you.

Do the spiritual audit. Take back your life. Step into who God called you to be.

What habits are you still struggling with today? Have you done your spiritual audit? It’s time to break free.
