Walking with the Women in the Bible: Hannah, A Woman of Deep Prayer and Faith

Who Was Hannah?
Hannah’s story is found in 1 Samuel, and it begins with heartbreak. She was one of two wives of Elkanah, but while the other wife, Peninnah, had children, Hannah remained barren. In ancient times, childbearing was a significant marker of a woman’s worth, and for Hannah, this barrenness brought great pain and shame. On top of that, Peninnah taunted her cruelly, adding insult to injury (1 Samuel 1:6-7).
But instead of allowing bitterness to take over, Hannah turned her grief into prayer. In one of the most heartfelt prayers in the Bible, she wept bitterly before the Lord, pouring out her soul and pleading for a son. In her prayer, she made a vow: “O Lord Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life” (1 Samuel 1:11).
God heard Hannah’s cry. She gave birth to Samuel, who would grow up to be one of Israel’s greatest prophets, and she fulfilled her vow by dedicating him to the Lord’s service. Hannah’s story is one of deep faith, patience, and trust in God’s perfect timing.
Hannah’s Triumphs and Lessons
One of Hannah’s greatest triumphs is her persistence in prayer. Despite her anguish, she didn’t give up or grow resentful. Instead, she continually brought her pain before God, trusting Him to answer in His way and in His time. Another triumph in Hannah’s story is her fulfillment of her vow. After Samuel was born, she could have held onto him, but instead, she kept her promise to God, taking him to the temple and dedicating his life to the Lord’s service. This act of surrender shows us what it means to give our most precious blessings back to God, trusting Him to use them for His glory.
Hannah’s prayer life and her willingness to release her greatest blessing into God’s hands are powerful reminders of what true faith looks like. Even when her heart was breaking, she chose to trust God, and He rewarded her faithfulness.

If Hannah were alive today, I believe she’d be someone who would encourage us to be women (and men) of prayer. She’d remind us that God hears every cry of our hearts and that, no matter how long the waiting season, we can trust Him to be faithful. Perhaps she’d lead a prayer ministry, helping others pour out their hearts before the Lord just as she did.
Applying Hannah’s Story to Our Generation
Hannah’s story is a timeless lesson in faith and prayer. In today’s world, we often expect quick results and instant answers, but Hannah’s life shows us the importance of persistence in prayer and waiting on God’s timing. Even when we face disappointment or feel like God is silent, we can follow Hannah’s example by continuing to bring our burdens to Him, knowing that He hears us.
Her story also teaches us about the power of surrender. When God answered her prayer, Hannah didn’t hold onto her blessing selfishly. She gave Samuel back to God, knowing that He had a greater purpose for her son. This kind of trust and surrender is a challenge to us today—are we willing to give our blessings back to God, knowing He has a greater plan?
What We Can Learn from Hannah
From Hannah, we can mirror her unwavering faith and deep prayer life.
