Walking with the Women in the Bible: Miriam, A Prophetess of Courage and Leadership

Welcome back to Walking with the Women in the Bible, where we continue to journey through the lives of women whose stories of faith, courage, and wisdom still inspire us today. This time, we are walking alongside Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron, a woman whose leadership and boldness played a key role in Israel’s history. Miriam’s story teaches us about the power of influence, the strength of worship, and the importance of humility and trust in God’s plan.

Let’s examine Miriam’s life and explore what her legacy can teach us about courage, faith, and leadership.

Who Was Miriam?

Miriam first appears in the Bible in the book of Exodus, and from the very beginning, her courage and quick thinking are evident. As the older sister of Moses, she watched over him when he was placed in a basket on the Nile River to escape Pharaoh’s decree that all Hebrew baby boys be killed. It was Miriam who boldly approached Pharaoh’s daughter after she discovered the infant Moses, suggesting that her mother could nurse the baby. This action not only saved Moses’ life but also allowed him to be raised by his own mother in his early years (Exodus 2:4-9).

Later, after Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt and God parted the Red Sea, Miriam again stepped into a leadership role. She led the Israelite women in a song of praise and worship to God, celebrating His deliverance. In Exodus 15:20-21, we see Miriam described as a prophetess, leading the people in worship with timbrels and dancing, singing, “Sing to the Lord, for He is highly exalted. Both horse and driver He has hurled into the sea.”

Miriam’s story is one of faithfulness and boldness, but as we’ll see, it’s also a reminder of the importance of humility and trust in God’s leadership.

Miriam’s Triumphs and Lessons

Miriam's life is marked by both triumphs and significant lessons. One of her greatest triumphs was her courage as a young girl, watching over her baby brother Moses and ensuring his safety. Her quick thinking and boldness in approaching Pharaoh’s daughter were instrumental in securing Moses’ future, which would ultimately lead to Israel's deliverance.

Another triumph came after the parting of the Red Sea, where Miriam’s leadership in worship showed her deep faith and love for God. She led the women of Israel in praising God for His mighty deliverance, demonstrating that worship and celebration are powerful responses to God’s intervention in our lives.

However, Miriam’s story also carries an important lesson about the dangers of pride and jealousy. In Numbers 12, Miriam, along with Aaron, spoke out against Moses, questioning his leadership and criticizing his marriage to a Cushite woman. This act of rebellion against God’s chosen leader resulted in Miriam being struck with leprosy as a punishment. Although she was healed after Moses prayed for her, she spent seven days outside the camp, separated from the people. This humbling experience reminds us that, even in positions of leadership, we must be careful to submit to God’s authority and avoid letting jealousy or pride take root.

Miriam’s Legacy

Miriam’s legacy is one of leadership, worship, and faith. As Moses's sister, she played a significant role in Israel’s deliverance, not just as a family member but also as a prophetess and leader. She is a powerful example of how women can lead in faith and courage, even in difficult times.

Her story also serves as a reminder of the importance of humility in leadership. Though Miriam was a prophetess and a leader among the people, her moment of pride and jealousy toward Moses led to her temporary downfall. Yet, even in this, God’s mercy was evident, as she was restored after repentance.

If Miriam were living in our generation, I believe she would still be a woman of influence, leading others in worship and encouraging them to trust in God’s deliverance. She would likely be a spiritual leader, helping people recognize God’s presence in their lives and guiding them in heartfelt praise. At the same time, she would caution against the dangers of pride and encourage humility in those who seek to lead.

Applying Miriam’s Story to Our Generation

Miriam’s story speaks to us today in powerful ways, especially regarding leadership, worship, and humility. In our world, where leadership often comes with challenges and pressures, Miriam’s courage in standing up for her family and leading the people of Israel in worship offers a model of boldness and faithfulness.

Her story also reminds us of the importance of humility in leadership. Like Miriam, we may sometimes feel tempted to question others’ roles or feel jealous of the positions God has given them. But Miriam’s experience with leprosy teaches us to stay humble, recognizing that God’s plan is bigger than our own perspectives. True leadership requires trusting in God’s authority and remaining focused on His will rather than our own ambitions.

Miriam’s role in leading worship after the Red Sea crossing is also a beautiful reminder of the power of praising God in the midst of victory. In today’s world, where we often rush from one event to the next, Miriam’s example calls us to pause, reflect, and give thanks for God’s faithfulness.

What We Can Learn from Miriam

From Miriam, we can mirror her courage in taking action when necessary, especially in protecting and caring for others, just as she did for Moses. Her worship leadership reminds us to celebrate God’s victories in our lives and to lead others in praise.

We should also learn from her moment of rebellion against Moses. Miriam’s story teaches us to guard our hearts against pride and jealousy and to remember that God is ultimately in control. True leadership is rooted in humility and trust in God’s plan, even when it differs from our own desires or expectations.
