3 Ways God May Be Trying to Get Your Attention: Lessons From My Own Journey

DISCERNING GOD'S VOICE

God often speaks through recurring messages, a lack of peace, and life circumstances. Discover three ways God may be trying to get your attention and lessons learned from my own healing journey.

Have you ever looked back on a season of your life and realized God was speaking all along?

Many of us expect God to speak through dramatic encounters, yet throughout Scripture He often spoke through repeated messages, circumstances, convictions, dreams, and the gentle leading of the Holy Spirit.

Looking back on my own healing journey, I can see many ways God was trying to get my attention long before I understood what He was saying.

The problem was not that God was silent. The problem was that I did not yet know how to listen.
In this post
  • How God uses repetition to get our attention
  • Why a lack of peace can be a spiritual signal
  • How God redirects circumstances to reveal His purpose
  • Lessons from my personal healing journey
  • A prayer for discernment and obedience

1. The Same Message Keeps Appearing

One of the most common ways God gets our attention is through repetition.

Sometimes a Scripture keeps appearing. Sometimes a sermon addresses the very thing you have been struggling with. Sometimes multiple people unknowingly speak the same message into your life. Sometimes God even uses recurring dreams.

A Personal Reflection
For many years, I experienced recurring dreams that I did not understand. At the time, I was not grounded in Christ and did not know how to seek biblical answers. Even when I asked others about the dreams, the explanations often did not make sense.
Looking back, I can now see that God was telling an entire story about my life circumstances. He was revealing things I could not yet perceive, warning me about patterns, and trying to draw my attention to areas that needed healing and change.

What I once dismissed as random dreams became evidence that God had been speaking all along.

When God repeats a message, it is often because He wants us to pause and pay attention.

Ask Yourself
  • Is there a Scripture God keeps bringing to my attention?
  • Is there a lesson that seems to follow me wherever I go?
  • Have I been having recurring dreams, convictions, or confirmations?

“For God speaks again and again, though people do not recognize it.”

Job 33:14 NLT

2. You Cannot Find Peace

Many people assume peace is simply the absence of problems. Biblical peace is much deeper than that.

Peace is often one of the ways the Holy Spirit guides us. It does not mean every difficult situation is outside of God's will, but there is a difference between facing opposition with God’s peace and living with a deep, persistent uneasiness that something is not right.

Looking for Peace in the Wrong Places
Before I began my healing journey, I searched for peace in many places, but not in God. I did not know any better. Deep down, I always sensed that something was spiritually off in my life.
What I understand now is that God was drawing me toward Him. The uneasiness I carried became part of the invitation to seek healing, freedom, and a deeper relationship with Christ.

I could not explain it. I could not identify it. I just knew something was not right.

Sometimes God allows us to become uncomfortable with our current condition so that we will seek Him more earnestly. The peace we are looking for is often found not in changing our circumstances but in drawing closer to Christ.

Ask Yourself
  • Am I seeking peace from God or from other sources?
  • Is God using my discomfort to draw me closer to Him?
  • Have I been ignoring spiritual warning signs?

“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts.”

Colossians 3:15

3. God Begins Redirecting Your Circumstances

Sometimes God gets our attention by changing our direction.

Doors close. Plans change. Relationships shift. Unexpected challenges arise. At first, these changes can feel frustrating or even painful.

Yet many times, they are part of God's process of leading us toward His purpose.

When God Opened My Eyes
God gradually began opening my eyes to patterns in my life. He revealed family patterns, recurring cycles, and mistakes that continued repeating themselves.
What began as awareness eventually led me to surrender. That surrender led me into prayer. Prayer led me into healing. Healing led me into freedom. And that journey ultimately gave birth to Healing Hearts Prayer Circle.

What I once viewed as setbacks and disappointments were actually God's invitations to transformation.

Ask Yourself
  • Is God revealing patterns that need to be broken?
  • Have I noticed recurring cycles in my life or family?
  • Is God inviting me to surrender something I have been holding onto?

“A man's heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.”

Proverbs 16:9

What I once viewed as setbacks and disappointments were actually God's invitations to transformation.

Looking Back, I Can See His Hand

As I reflect on my own journey, I can see all three of these patterns at work.

God spoke through recurring dreams. He used a lack of peace to draw me closer to Him. He opened my eyes to patterns and cycles that required healing and surrender.

At the time, I did not understand what He was doing. Today, I can see His hand in every step.

The same God who spoke to Samuel, Joseph, Paul, and countless others is still speaking today.

The question is not whether God is speaking. The question is whether we are willing to listen.

Prayer

Father, thank You for being a God who still speaks to Your children. Open my spiritual ears to hear Your voice clearly and my heart to respond in obedience. Help me recognize the ways You are guiding, correcting, protecting, and encouraging me. Remove distractions, fear, confusion, and anything that prevents me from discerning Your will. Give me wisdom to recognize Your direction and the courage to follow where You lead. In Jesus' name, Amen.
